| The
Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God is a world-wide
Catholic health care organization providing services
in forty six countries. The Order was founded by St.
John of God in Granada, Spain in 1537. The values
of St John of God Hospitaller Services are Hospitality,
Compassion, Respect, Justice and Excellence. |

John Ciudad was born in 1495
at Montemor-o-Novo in the south of Portugal. He was
reared at Oropesa, Spain. The greater part of his life
was spent as a wanderer, working as a Shepherd, bookseller,
soldier and labourer. In his travels, he covered several
countries in Europe and North Africa. |
When
Saint John of God finally settled in Granada, Spain,
around the age of forty, he underwent a conversion
experience so dramatic in its intensity that he was
placed in a psychiatric hospital. His brief experience
of the harsh treatment meted out to patients gave
him an understanding of the real needs of the sick.
As a result, he anticipated some of the most important
principles of health care and treatment that are being
implemented in progressive health care systems today. |
 |
His
unique appeal for alms “for the love of God,
do good to yourselves by doing good for others”
led him being nick-named “Juan de Dios”. |
He gave
the last 12 years of his life helping people living
on the margins of society and died on his 55th birthday,
8th March 1550. |

| Menni
Services is named after Saint Benedict Menni, an Italian
Saint John of God Brother who was sent to Spain in 1867
to restore the Order there. In his lifetime, he founded
22 hospitals in Spain, Portugal and South America.
In 1881, he founded the Hospitaller Sisters of the
Scared Heart of Jesus. In 1911, he was appointed Prior
General of the Order. He was beatified by Pope John
Paul II on 23rd June 1985 and canonized on 21st November
1999. |
